As the dust was slowly settling following the Fraser River Gold Rush of the late
1850's, came to these shores a most colorful and remarkable man, whom by the age
of 20 had acquired the status of a seasoned sailor, having left England and circumnavigated
the globe. Of the opinion that fortune favored the bold, this adventurous young
fellow gave up his career as an officer to join a small party of prospectors first
digging for gold in California and soon after in what was then known as New Caledonia.
The indomitable character was to leave a significant mark on Vancouver. His name
was John Heighton, best known as Gassy Jack, proprietor of the first saloon in this
city. If viewed by the more conservative elements of his time as some sort of rebel,
to the mill workers and ship crews that he first catered to, Gassy Jack was nothing
short of a hero for he provided great fun, liquor and entertainment.
In the spirit of their namesake, Gassy Jack & The Granville Boys is a happy, infectious
trio playing lively festive music including popular pieces of that era. The trio
has had great success performing at private and corporate parties and special events
including heritage festivals and major exhibitions across Canada. A favorite act
at parades, galas and sports events, feature performances also include opening of
a bank, the chistening of a new wing at the Vancouver General Hospital to televised
political eents such as American Election Night. And when you least expect it, you
may one day find them entertaining locals and tourists aboard the False Creek Electric
Railway Cars and the next, performing for corporate clients, greeting VIPs as they
are boarding a cruise ship or entertaining patrons at the top of Whistler mountain.
